Ahhh summertime. The kids are out of school, everyone is taking vacations, feverishly eating sno-balls on a regular basis and suddenly making friends with that neighbor with the pool. While summer kicks into gear, you don’t have to sweat it out while you are trying to let the good times roll in New Orleans. A little careful wardrobe planning will go a long way so you can keep cool in style.
I’m a stickler for breathable, lightweight fabrics in the summer. Whenever I go shopping I immediately look for the fabric content tag, and if it isn’t cotton or something similar, then I steer clear. Just adhering to this simple mindset will increase your comfort level ten fold.
If you want to stay cool, look for cotton, linen, tencel, modal, and bamboo. Choose cuts with a loose fit, especially around the armholes. Looking forward to that fancy meal you’ve had reservations for months? Some fine dining establishments let the jacket requirement slide in the summer, but it is best to call ahead if unsure.
If you want to keep your perspiration to a minimum avoid packing rayon, polyester, lycra and spandex. I own a tissue thin t-shirt made out of rayon, and even though the material is practically see through I might as well be wearing a jacket. These materials are best suited for cooler weather so give them a break until the fall. The exception to these are moisture wicking specialty textiles such as microblend performance fabrics that are specially designed for outdoor activities.
