From the folks who bring you the local favorite French Quarter Festival every year comes the ever-popular and jubilant New Orleans event, Satchmo SummerFest. From August 1 – 4, New Orleans celebrates the birthday of one of our most beloved legends, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, and this is New Orleans, so you know we’re bringing more than just a cake and candles. This weekend-long festival dedicated to the legacy of one of America’s jazz greats is packed with traditional and contemporary New Orleans jazz and brass band music all weekend long. Catch New Orleans artists like Leroy Jones, Rebirth Brass Band, Treme Brass Band, Leah Chase, and Lars Edegran’s New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, just to name a few.
Amidst the smooth rhythms and divine melodies, you’ll be able to catch seminars and discussions led by speakers who knew or were inspired by Satchmo himself, including Armstrong’s producer and friend, recording industry icon George Avakian, Yoshio Toyoma, a.k.a. the ‘Satchmo of Japan’ (who will also perform with his Dixie Saints), and Grammy-award winning Satchmo scholar Dan Morgenstern.
Further festival perks include a Satchmo art show, Sunday morning Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church in Treme, a ton of activities for the kids, and a traditional second line parade to rival all second lines. With all the dancing and celebrating you are sure to work up an appetite, so you’ll want to fuel up down on “Red Bean Alley” where New Orleans restaurants will be serving the best local cuisine, including Satchmo’s favorite, red beans and rice. There will be poboys filled with pulled pork, soft-shell crab, hot sausage, and even Japanese BBQ beef, as well as jambalaya, savory and sweet beignets, snoballs, and crepes from restaurants like Antoine’s Restaurant, Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse, Oceana Grill, and Ninja. To wet your whistle, Abita Beer and New Orleans Original Daiquiris will be serving up cool, refreshing New Orleans festival necessities.
Come on out to the Old U.S. Mint with your party hat on to celebrate New Orleans music and a jazz legend very near and dear to our hearts.
