New Orleans Shopping: 5 Stores for Kids and Babies

We’re spotlighting a few of our favorite locally owned New Orleans stores where you can find home goods, clothes, gifts and one-of-a-kind souvenirs to bring home. We wouldn’t want to leave stuff for the little ones out: here are a few of our favorite stores selling goods for children and babies.

For the Hollywood South celebrity in the making: Know a little one with a fashion sense to rival Suri Cruise? Pippen Lane is a chic children’s clothing store owned by Anna Beth Goodman, wife of actor John. At this Magazine Street shop you’ll find high-quality clothes, furniture and accessories reflecting the latest styles (but scaled down for little ones).

For the hipster tot: Angelique Kids offers maternity wear and clothes from newborn to tween. “We’re not really a store that has all the traditional things,” says owner Coleen Eastman. Angelique Baby stocks C&C California T-shirts, Quinny strollers and other items indulgent grandparents (or generous aunts) will surely enjoy giving.

For the savvy-but-stylish: Grown-ups in New Orleans who are smart shoppers surely know about Swap, the local chain of high-end consignment stores where you can find clothes and accessories from tony brands in near-new condition for fantastic prices. You can start training a savvy shopper at a young age with Swap For Kids, which besides carrying high-end national brands, stocks local brands like Orient Expressed (another great kids store).

For the NOLA-centric: There are plenty of New Orleans-themed T-shirt shops in town, but Fleurty Girl (you might recognize the owner from our GoNOLA TV series) has the distinction of being one of the first and also one that has a ton of kids’ stuff in a wide variety of sizes. Dirty Coast, another beloved NOLA t-shirt purveyor, also has some kids’ clothes.

For the cool kids. SOPO, on a quiet corner of S. Carrollton Street in Mid-City, has some decidedly non-kid-friendly stuff: cocktail accouterments, cheeky greeting cards with expletives written in beautiful cursive, and other irreverent hostess gifts. But the store also carries a selection of unique, locally made baby items. A personal favorite is the line of New Orleans map-brandished bibs and baby blankets by local artist Ellen MacComber, whose paintings you should also check out. The store also carries some adorable and cuddly stuffed animals and other sweet baby items that have a modern flare.
