So, whether you like ‘em spicy, spiked with lots of horseradish, or filled with unique garnishes, here are 12 local spots where, like the city of New Orleans itself, the Bloody Marys are truly one of a kind.
12 NEW ORLEANS SPOTS FOR A BLOODY MARY
Avenue Pub – Order a Bloody Mary at this popular St. Charles pub, and watch each bartender customize it to his or her liking. Or, just let them know what you like. Begin with the spice options: Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, Tony Chachere’s, Sriracha, horseradish, Crystal hot sauce, etc., then add tomato juice. Top with your choice of vodka or gin and garnish with pickled beans, lemon, and lime. This is a great place for crafting a Bloody that suits your taste without ever having to lift a finger.
Atchafalaya – Curious about Bloody Marys but not sure what kind you’d like? Easy! Build your own at this popular brunch spot on Louisiana Avenue. Choose your vodka or gin, and they’ll supply the glass with liquor and ice. Then head to the Bloody Mary buffet where you can craft a masterpiece of your very own.
Café Fleur de Lis – You’ve got options at this French Quarter breakfast spot on Chartres Street. Choose from traditional, bacon, green tomato, or shrimp. The traditional mix is made in-house, has a strong horseradish kick, and comes garnished with okra, pepperoncini peppers, olives, spicy beans, lemon and lime. The bacon features bacon-infused vodka and a slice of bacon along with the regular garnishes. And the green tomato is made with green tomato puree, cilantro, and celery seed, then garnished with cherry tomatoes. My vote is for the shrimp, which is a traditional Bloody Mary with two barbecued shrimp on the rim. Crawfish Bloodys are available when in season.
Molly’s at the Market – Next time you’re near the French Market, pop into Molly’s on Decatur Street for their awesome Bloody Mary featuring New Orleans Finest mix, Tony Chachere’s, Crystal hot sauce, Worcestershire, lemon, lime, and the not-so-secret ingredient: a shot of Guiness beer. Choose your own vodka or gin, and they’ll serve it up with spicy beans and olives.
Luizza’s by the Track — A Mid-City favorite near the Fairgrounds. Zing Zang mix is doctored up with horseradish, celery salt, and Worcestershire sauce then garnished with cocktail onions, spicy green beans, olives, lemon and lime. One bartender describes it as “killer”.
Walk-Ons – Not a horseradish fan? Then this one’s for you! The popular sports bar on Poydras starts with Zing Zang mix then adds some Worcestershire and hot sauce (no horseradish!) and garnishes with spicy beans, olives, lemon and lime. The classic with slightly less kick!
Elizabeth’s – This Bywater brunch haven pickles their own beans and pre-makes their half tomato juice, half V8 juice Bloody Mary mix with vodka and all the traditional seasonings — horseradish, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce, Louisiana hot sauce, lemon, and lime juice. House-made pickled spicy beans, green olives, lemons, and limes are stuffed in the glass as garnish. Washes down the praline bacon real nice.
The Original Pierre Maspero’s – Bartender Derrick marinates house-pickled onions, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes in Crown Russe vodka, then adds it to their house-made mix along with some Zing Zang. Vodka soaked veggies garnish the glass in addition to celery, lemon, and lime. Grab one of these before walking around the Pedestrian Mall or heading to the French Market.
Le Bon Temps Roule – This Magazine Street dive and live music venue might not look like much from the outside but there are always good things happening inside, like their Bloody Mary made in large batches with house-made mix, horseradish, celery salt, and Crystal hot sauce. Your choice of vodka or gin and garnished with spicy beans, picked okra, celery, olives, cherry tomato, lemon, and cucumber. A personal favorite since I’m always on the hunt for pickled okra.
Brennan’s – Like everything else at Brennan’s, the Bloody Mary is carefully crafted with house-made mix, horseradish, spicy Cajun beans, picked okra, lemon and lime. And, as a bonus burst of flavor, Creole seasoning mixed by chef Slade Rushing dusts the rim of the glass.
Mid-City Yacht Club – Sink your teeth into some stellar bar food and their bright and flavorful bloody mary made with house-made tomato juice mix and cilantro. Choose your favorite vodka or gin and enjoy pickled okra, spicy beans, olives, lemon and lime as a garnish. Bloody mary cravings can always be cured here as they’re open 365 days a year.
Mercedes-Benz Superdome – Zing Zang mix doctored up with all the fixins’. Pro tip: shell out the dough for an extra shot. And remember friends; Dome bloodys taste even better when the Saints are winning.
