New Orleans Friday Food Find: Monte Cristo at ManhattanJack

In this edition of Friday Food Finds, New Orleans Food Goddess Lorin Gaudin shares her latest New Orleans dining discovery: the Monte Cristo at ManhattanJack!

Sweet and salty: the combination is brilliant and hunger-inducing. New to the New Orleans dining scene, ManhattanJack at 4930 Prytania St. is a confection, coffee and pastry café that now is serving sandwiches. On the menu – rocking it old-school – is a pillow-soft, salt-sweet, heady, tangy and terrific Monte Cristo.  Monte Cristo sandwiches have a murky history – no one knows for sure where or precisely when they originated, but the first mentions for the sandwich are said to have been in the 1940s.  At ManhattanJack, the kitchen rolls out a big, beautiful rendition of the Monte Cristo – fluffy slices of French toast cradling a thick layer of lightly salty ham, turkey and melted Swiss cheese. Once off the griddle, all toasty and golden, the sandwich is given a heavy dusting of powdered sugar. In classic fashion, homemade raspberry jam is served alongside to slather over the works or for dunking. Not often found in New Orleans cuisine, this is a seriously satisfying, nostalgic, and wonderful sandwich with a play of textures, flavors and soul.
