Enjoying the Great Outdoors, New Orleans Style

On this episode of GoNOLA Radio, A.J. Allegra from the NOLA Project joins our hosts to discuss outdoor theater, music, food & activities in New Orleans.

June is a month of particular charm and magic in New Orleans. As always, our music, food, and art scenes boast the best of the best, and on this episode of GoNOLA Radio, we give you some tips on how to take the party outdoors and breathe in all New Orleans has to offer.

Our guest this week is A.J. Allegra, Artistic Director of The NOLA Project, a local theatre company that produces classical and contemporary plays, including a hugely successful Shakespeare in the Garden series, set in the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden in City Park. Besides being a perfect setting for outdoor theatre, City Park is also a place to golf and play tennis; there’s fishing spots, swan boat rides, and even two brand new putt putt courses.

With the beautiful scents of gardenias and night-blooming jasmine hanging in the air throughout the city, take a stroll along the Riverwalk promenade right on the Mississippi River and catch the glittering lights of Algiers, or hop on the streetcar for a breezy ride through the historic Garden District.

Outdoor dining here is both charmingly European and uniquely New Orleanian. For some of the best al fresco eateries, try Delachaise for a splendid St. Charles view, Bouligny Tavern on Magazine for a savory gouda beignet, Café Amelie for a beautiful, historic French Quarter experience, and Café Degas in Mid-City for deliciously classic French cuisine. If you’re looking to enjoy cocktails outdoors, grabbing a drink to-go anywhere in the French Quarter and taking a stroll is one of the best ways to carouse. Or if you want to kick back, Napoleon House in the Quarter has a serene courtyard and isn’t too touristy, not to mention Bacchanal’s excellent wine selection, craft cocktails, and gourmet menu in the Bywater.

In this episode, A.J. joins our hosts to tell you all about these outdoor hotspots and, of course, about where to hear great music al fresco. From the Bacchanal patio’s live music experience to this summer’s lineup of outdoor music festivals like the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival, Satchmo SummerFest (a kind of “mini-JazzFest”), and weekly performances from local music legends at Wednesdays On The Point, you’ll have more than enough chances to soak up all New Orleans has to offer in the open air.
