This past weekend, we watched in awe as parts of Texas became inundated with floods after Hurricane Harvey battered the Gulf Coast. The timing hit close to home as we commemorated the twelve-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
CNN reported that “The rain continues, with flood waters reaching 50 inches in Houston. An additional 15-25 inches of rain is expected this week. Officials say some parts of the region could be uninhabitable for weeks or even months to come. FEMA estimates more than 30,000 people are headed to shelters in the surrounding areas.”
Our hearts go out to you, Texas.
We will never forget the compassion and generosity you bestowed upon us in 2005. We hope to see that same spirit shared now, in your time of need. Whether you are a native or NOLA visitor, you’ll find ways you can help below:
Donate to relief organizations from your phone
Technology has made it easier than ever to help our neighbors in need. Apple has set up a way to donate directly to the American Red Cross through iTunes. You can also text REDCROSS to 90999, or donate here.
Donate to Food Banks
If you’re in Texas, and wish to donate to your local food bank, you can find a location here.
Many people rush to offer help in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters. But we also know all too well that the effects are long-lasting. Consider offering long-term support here for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Hospitals in South Texas have put out an urgent call for blood donations. The hospitals are urging all donors in San Antonio or New Braunfels to give blood, especially blood type O Negative. You can find a list of your nearest blood bank here.
Assist Animal Rescue Organizations
The Texas SPCA is the largest animal shelter organization in north Texas. You can donate to the group here. Organizers are also asking for “in kind” contributions as their shelters cope with an influx of new animals, according to a statement from the SPCA.
Locals Can Donate Gift Cards
A band of local restaurants have teamed up to collect gift cards to be distributed to flood victims in Texas. Gift cards in any amount can be donated but should be for major retailers like Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Shell gas stations, and Target to ensure they can be used in the affected areas. Gift cards will be accepted Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the following restaurants: Cavan, Sylvain, Barrel Proof NOLA, Meauxbar, Palace Cafe, Arnaud’s & the French 75 Bar, Pizza Nola: Lakeview’s Savory Cafe, Cottage Catering, and Taceaux Loceaux.
