I’m not sure where to begin when it comes to listing the accomplishments of Wycliffe Gordon. The man is a world-renowned jazz musician who began playing the trombone at age 12 and has since played with legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. He demonstrates a remarkable commitment to jazz education and his awards/accomplishments include: Jazz Journalists Association Trombonist of the Year (2001-2002, 2006-2008, 2011), commissioned to be musical director for Apollo Theatre’s 75-year anniversary celebration, The ASCAP Foundation Vanguard Award, Honorary Doctorate from University of Scranton, and becoming the youngest member of the U.S. Statesmen of Jazz. His latest work, Hello Pops!, honors Louis Armstrong and is a mix of Gordon’s original work and covers of Armstrong’s work. See Gordon and his band take the stage to perform Hello Pops! at Jazz Fest on May 4th.
