Cocktail Culture

Weeknights in the Marigny

I lost the county spelling bee when I was in 5th grade. Well, let me be more specific. I got 2nd in the Jefferson Elementary School spelling bee, which earned me a spot in the county spelling bee. It’s not that I’m such a great speller, it’s just that everyone else wasn’t. Sort of like a good game of Scrabble, if you work the board in your favor, you might just win. Triple. Word. Score.

Apparently I sat in the right seat for the spelling bee at Jefferson. And knew that B-A-L-L-E-T had a double-L, unlike the person who came before me. It’s about strategy. I sat next to a kid who power-housed Tonka Trucks. I took dance class. I won.

The county bee didn’t work quite the same way. I lost out after a couple rounds. I can’t really remember what happened, but these days watching the middle school nerds spell polysyllabic non-sensical Germanic science terminology on CNN makes me feel pretty dumb.

Until now.

Now is my chance to redeem myself, and drink $2 Miller High Life’s in the mean time. Lost Love Lounge on Dauphine Street in the Marigny has a spelling bee every Wednesday. Go to participate in the spelling bee, and get some Vietnamese food when you foul out. Or whatever it’s called when you don’t know how to spell something, so you purposefully spell something else (something your grandmother wouldn’t say).

Pho King in the back of Lost Love Lounge will replace your spelling bee championship trophy hunger with a full, satisfied belly. I promise. Get the pork bowl. It’s a trophy in itself.

Sarah Quintana is a fixture performer in New Orleans.
Sarah Quintana is the resident gig at Mimi’s in the Marigny on Tuesday Nights. Thanks to Sarah Quintana for the photo.

If the spelling bee didn’t hook you, here’s another reason to leave your house/hotel during the week. And maybe this is my new numero uno: Sarah Quintana on Tuesdays at Mimi’s in the Marigny (half a block from Lost Love Lounge on Royal and Franklin). The first time I heard Ms. Quintana’s voice, I was transfixed. Her sound echoes a different era, her spirit embodies New Orleans (she earned her chops street performing here), and her trio featuring Matt Johnson and Tommy Sciple cooly fill the room with predictably unpredictable sound, not to mention Sarah on guitar herself. Think French folk plus jazz with a twist of the 1940’s in a pin-up girl bathing suit. Do it my style: get a whiskey and a CD.

Recap: Sara Quintana on Tuesday at Mimi’s. Spelling bee on Wednesday at Lost Love Lounge. Hell, make it a holy trinity and see Stooges Brass Band on Thursday at Hi Ho Lounge. If you live here, you’ll go back for more. If you are just visiting, you’ll be so proud of yourself for being a part of weekly, resident gigs at local, off-beat venues. You can always recover on the weekend.
