Toups’ Meatery: Mid-City’s Contemporary Cajun Bistro

So much of New Orleans’ great attractions are just steps or blocks from our historic streetcar lines, Audubon Park, the Aquarium, the French Quarter, City Park, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the St. Charles mansions, just to name a few of these high profile attractions. This spring, another great attraction popped up just off the red streetcar line when Toups’ Meatery opened its doors. Toups’ bills itself as “a contemporary Cajun bistro. Chef Isaac Toups presents fine food, specialty cocktails, and a charcuterie program inspired by deep-rooted Louisiana family traditions.” What that means is Toups’ is a great place to relax and to enjoy some fantastic down-home food and quality drinks.

Toups’ dining space is bright and clean with matching light wood table and bar tops. Large windows overlooking Carrollton Avenue and the red streetcar line provide fantastic natural light and a great view of the passing street cars. While the building’s layout has cut the dining space into two distinct spaces, it adds to the intimacy of the space. The bar’s deep top makes forfeiting a table an easy move, with plenty of room for the sharing of plates and drinks. In fact, the bar may just be our favorite spot in Toups’.

Considering the name is Toups’ Meatery, the menu is heavily meat-centric, but the veggies are not forgotten. Alongside the expected boards of house-made fresh and cured meats and selected cheeses, is the veggie board featuring grilled, pickled and fresh vegetables. The main plates showcase a plethora of meat from spare rib, tri tip beef and double cut pork chop to the more exotic rabbit pate and lamb neck. A healthy selection of sides guarantees you’ll be able to find the right accompaniment to complement your dishes without a problem. However, to us, Toups’ is all about sharing. Ordering up a number of sides and small plates with a couple of drinks or a bottle of wine makes for a great way to spend an evening.

So next time you find yourself on the streetcar line heading home from City Park, get off at the stop in front of Toups’. You’ll be glad you did.
