Try These NOLA Food Challenges

What would you do for a free t-shirt or the chance to see your face on the wall of a famous New Orleans restaurant? Would you eat 54 dozen oysters in 20 minutes? Would you destroy your taste buds for a week to tackle the Bayou hot wing challenge? You could be offered a lifetime of bragging rights alongside some of the greats, such as Man v. Food legend Adam Richman. You might even earn yourself some free food. From oysters to ice cream mountains, check out these food challenges around town.

15 Dozen Club

Acme Oyster House, several locations

An endless line of fresh hand-shucked oysters is the offer at this famous New Orleans haunt. The task? If you can eat 15 dozen or more, you’ll get your name on the board, a t-shirt, hat, and 50 percent off the bill. Eat more than the current leading competitor, Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas, who managed to eat 52 dozen oysters in one sitting, and the food is free. You must be 21 to enter and any trips to the bathroom are accompanied to make sure you don’t throw up, or you’ll be disqualified.

Tchoupitoulas Challenge

The Creole Creamery, 4924 Prytania St.   

The Tchoupitoulas Challenge tests one person’s ability to eat their largest sundae in its entirety in one sitting. Consisting of eight scoops of ice cream, eight toppings plus whipped cream, cherries, wafers, and sprinkles, this is no easy feat. Anyone who can complete the challenge will forever be immortalized on their wall of fame and have their name posted on the Creamery’s website. Warning: brain freeze ahead.

DatZilla Challenge

The DatZilla is a hot sausage, gator sausage, and crawfish sausage on three buns with andouille sauce, an order of fries, cheese, chili, onions, tomatoes, guacamole, jalapenos, and sour cream on top. People who wish to take part in the contest have 20 minutes to finish the DatZilla and two Abita Ambers, and then have to keep it all down for another 20 minutes. Winners receive Dat Dog merchandise and get the meal for free. Make sure to call 24 hours ahead so they can prepare the beast for your consumption!

Pancake Challenge

Put your love of pancakes to the test with Oceana Grill’s Pancake Challenge, consisting of eight, seven-inch pancakes topped with bananas, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. Only 25 minutes is allocated to complete the challenge. Your face will be forever immortalized on the wall of fame, and you’ll receive a $27 credit for the food and an official t-shirt. Hurrah!

Big Easy Donut Challenge

Have you ever dreamed of eating a donut bigger than your head? The Big Easy Donut is roughly the equivalent of five regular-sized donuts and can be glazed, chocolate covered, or chocolate sprinkled. If the challenger successfully finishes the entire donut within three minutes, they can choose from an array of prizes including gift cards, t-shirts, coffee mugs, merchandise, and of course, bragging rights.

Bayou Beast

Bayou Hot Wings, 6221 S. Claiborne Ave. #104 

Given the famous seal of approval by Man v. Food legend himself, these wings are famous for their delicious flavor as well as their heat. The rules? Consume 10 chicken wings in five minutes without the help of other food, drinks, or napkins. You cannot pre-strip the meat off the bone and you are not allowed a bathroom break. All contestants must call in 24 hours ahead and sign a waiver, as some challengers have found themselves in the hospital. For your trouble, you’ll land yourself a limited edition ‘Beast’ t-shirt, a spot on the hall of fame and a shout out across their popular social media platforms. Worth it? You decide.

Big John Burger Challenge

They call it the best burger on the Westbank and it’s easy to see why. Located in the heart of Old Gretna, The Big John Burger is two pounds (32-ounce) of juicy beef, served on a nine-inch muffuletta bun dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, cheese, and a side of fries. If you can finish it within the 30-minute time frame, there’s a free t-shirt up for grabs and their complimentary cocktail, the 32-ounce beast dubbed the ‘Trainwreck.’ We’re full just thinking about it.

Bonus Burger Challenge

Amongst the fully stocked bar and vintage gaming on offer at Barcadia, there also lies the mammoth Bonus Burger Challenge. This double patty burger with cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, a fried egg, fried onion rings, caramelized onions, sliced avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a side of fries and two pints of beer is not for the faint of heart. Dismantling of the burger is within the rules, so long as you eat every bite and don’t vomit within the 20-minute time frame. The $30 tab will be waived upon your victory, and you’ll get a free t-shirt and your face on the wall of fame. Can you stomach it?
