New Orleans is home to a booming art community with a growing number of incredible galleries which feature art exhibitions in all different mediums. One of my favorite galleries in New Orleans is Martine Chaisson Gallery. If you have yet to visit this gallery you are definitely missing out — it’s a beautiful space even without any of the featured art on the walls! Once the gallery is lit up with exhibitions it’s a truly stunning and open space featuring original contemporary art ranging from painting and sculptures to photography and drawing. It is located in the Arts/Warehouse District of New Orleans and is in close walking distance from a wide range of entertainment and cultural venues such as the Contemporary Arts Center and the Ogden Museum.
Martine Chaisson is currently showcasing the work of Aaron Ruell. Does the name sounds familiar? He played the beloved Kip in Napoleon Dynamite. How can you not want to see the work of the man who gave us this line: “Napoleon, don’t be jealous that I’ve been chatting online with babes all day. Besides we both know I’m training to be a cage fighter.”
Ruell will present an exhibition of his hyper-real photographic portraits and places he has shot over the past five years. His extremely witty photographs make for laughs and conversations as he takes you through his inspiration and childhood. My favorite photo is “Martini;” it’s like cocktail hour with a Stepford Wife.
After you peruse Ruell’s work, extend your cultural outing with some delicious New Orleans Cuisine. Try Herbsaint Restaurant for a classic dish with a New Orleans spin. You can’t go wrong with the Grilled G.F. Farms chicken with spring onion, risotto and crawfish americane. Try to grab a table on their patio, and enjoy this incredible Spring weather with one of their signature cocktails like the kumquat caipirinha!
