GoNOLA Instagram Pick of the Week: The Fleur de Lis

The fleur de lis means much more in New Orleans than the symbol of the New Orleans Saints; it’s an emblem of the city that represents perfection, light and life.

When I first moved to the Crescent City, I had no idea about the rich history behind the symbolic fleur-de-lis. I thought it was just some cool emblem that was picked up in 1967 by the New Orleans Saints as a tribute to the French heritage of New Orleans. Well, not exactly. The symbol actually represents French Royalty, which is fitting considering the Saints are royalty around here. But what I found to be even cooler and something many of you may not know is that this symbol we support so proudly actually signifies perfection, light and life… a perfect description not only of this image, but also of the city we love.
