GoNOLA Recommends: 5 Things to Do in New Orleans This Weekend

The second weekend of Mardi Gras provides plenty of opportunity for day-and-night revelry, whether at fetes like the Krewe de Lune Space Ball and Not-So-Superhero Party or the Endymion pre-party, Samedi Gras Festival. Parade-goers can also acquire a new mask at French Market before Fat Tuesday. Looking for something more intimate? Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a special five-course meal at the Rib Room.

Friday

1. Krewe de Lune Space Ball Deep space cowboys and cowgirls will enjoy a laser show, aerialists, open bar, photo booth, music from Boyfriend, and much more during the seventh annual Space Ball, held at the New Orleans Healing Center on St. Claude starting at 9 p.m. Costumes are mandatory, and intergalactic Western wear is “strongly encouraged.” Purchase advance tickets online for $30.

2. Not-So-Superhero Party Siberia on St. Claude Avenue hosts Dirty Coast’s 13th annual party on Friday starting at 10:30 p.m. Expect music from Rotary Downs, Cliff Hines, and Gravity A, who will perform the Talking Heads oeuvre, plus plenty of not-so-super superhero costumes – they’re required for entry. Admission is $15; doors at 9 p.m.

Saturday

3. Valentine’s Day Menu at the Rib Room – The Rib Room’s executive chef has created a five-course menu designed to heighten the senses. A special Valentine’s amuse bouche with Champagne and oysters with spiced-candied almonds sets the tone for a decadent meal; the deconstructed strawberry shortcake is a sweet ending. View the complete prix fixe menu ($85) for what’s in between. For reservations on Friday or Saturday night and complimentary valet parking, call (504) 529-7046.

4. Samedi Gras Festival – Join the party before the party at Samedi Gras Festival at noon on Saturday. Endymion’s free, pre-parade concert (on the Orleans Ave neutral ground near N. Murat Street in Mid-City) features performers like The Topcats, The Bucktown All Stars, and Groovy 7, priming spectators for the biggest parade of the season.

All Weekend

5. Mardi Gras Mask Market Browse masks from 14 vendors at French Market just in time for Fat Tuesday. Papier-mâché, leather, lace, feathers and horns are just a few of the materials you’ll find. There’s also live music at the free event, which runs Friday through Monday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
