Local Literati: Cool Bookstores in New Orleans

As a former employee of Loyola University Monroe Library, it’s safe to say I love books. I love the smell, binding and just the printed words! In my opinion there is nothing like a used book ready to be re-discovered by a new owner. In New Orleans, the used book store brings a new world allowing us to share common interests with others in the community through books. Don’t miss out on the wonderful world of books in New Orleans; visit the great stores that are near to my heart.

Blue Cypress Books

My personal love story for used books outside of the library developed at my first visit to Blue Cypress Books. Upon entrance, it’s almost like entering a new world ready for exploration guided by the friendly bookstore cat known as Kitty Meow. The store offers so many types of high quality secondhand books that will surely keep your interest with a variety of subjects ranging from classics to antiquarian. Many unique finds will help you build a stellar library! Thanks to Blue Cypress, I’m the owner of an Illustrated Junior Library Edition of A Tale of Two Cities in impeccable condition. The contents of this store can be overwhelming, but the owner and staff will help and show you all of the best selections for you! Blue Cypress Books’ owner helped me to incorporate more exciting (less nerdy and political) reads into my library and helped rebuild the missing links to my Harry Potter Collection, which is seriously the most important thing in life, right? Check out the incredible collection at Blue Cypress where you may find an original copy of The Scarlet Letter or maybe that’s just my hopes. After doing a little book shopping, enjoy your new finds with a cup of chamomile tea at one of my favorites: Rue De La Course Coffeehouse, and relax as the sound of the streetcar enters your ear.

Dauphine Street Books

Dauphine Street Books is a dream come true for a book nerd. Upon entering, you become intoxicated with the aroma of classic books. This location is an exciting treasure hunt with many shelves to review in your search for the perfect finds. Tucked away on Dauphine Street, it is the perfect day getaway with an added visit to Louisiana Bistro. Tell your stomach it needs the toasted ravioli and crab with asparagus; trust me you can’t go wrong with these dishes.
