Algiers Point is a beautiful, historic neighborhood just a short ferry ride from the Riverfront with a ton of activities from dining to shopping.

The hustle and bustle of city life can be exciting and, for some, it’s the only way to live, but let’s face it: there are times when you simply need a change of pace. I’m all for slowing things down every now and again. Just across the Mississippi there is a place where you can do just that: Algiers Point. Your most difficult decision will be whether to travel there by a short ferry ride or a quick drive across the Crescent City Connection, and whether to stay there for a day, a night, or longer. Algiers Point is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans and a beautiful, walkable area with many things to do.

Food

1. Tout de Suite (347 Verret St):  An incredibly cute spot that I stumbled upon while scavenging for treasures at estate sales in Algiers Point, Tout De Suite offers some gluten-free baked goods (always a plus for me) as well as coffees, teas, breakfast and lunch options.

Drink

2. Old Point Bar (545 Patterson):  My boyfriend is from Algiers, and this is his absolute favorite spot in the city to drink.  The proximity to the levee and the live music make it a great spot to relax and catch up with friends.

3. The Crown and Anchor (200 Pelican Ave):  Perhaps the most well-known bar in the Point, The Crown and Anchor prides itself on being “New Orleans’ only authentic English pub.”  It’s a small bar and offers darts, as well as pub quizzes on Thursday nights.

Outdoor Activities

4. The Levee:  Yes, nature can be a thing to do in and of itself!  Walking or biking on the levee is so much fun and offers you unparalleled views of the New Orleans skyline.  Enjoy the distinctive sound of the calliope as the Steamboat Natchez cruises down the river.

5. Guided tour:  Algiers Point Tours has a two hour tour with a dedicated guide who will enlighten you on the history of Algiers Point and show you some historic landmarks and architectural highlights along the way.

6. History and Architecture self-paced tours:  If you’re a DIY kinda person, check out the fun tour maps provided by the Algiers Point Association that will guide you around the neighborhoods and discover their fascinating facts as you go.

Shopping

7. Rosetree Blown Glass Studio (446 Vallette St): A great place to shop for gifts, this shop offers ornaments, candles, vases, and much more.  Each piece is signed by the artist/owner, Mark Rosenbaum, and if you call ahead you can be sure to come during a time you can watch the glassblowers hard at work.

8. Nola Potter: (240 Pelican Ave): This artisan shop has a mix of amazing local art and goods. Check out the ornaments in stock right now, as well as the Sweet Olive Soap Works line, the scarves, and (of course) the pottery.

Bed and Breakfasts:  If you’re looking to stay in beautiful Algiers Point, there are a few B&Bs to choose from. Check out Bed and Breakfast On the Point (405 Delaronde), Belleville Cottage (317 Belleville; also offers massage therapy services), and House of the Rising Sun (335 Pelican Ave).
