Yoga might be 5,000 years old, but it only took New Orleans five years to add our own funky spin on this age-old practice of health and well-being. Since Hurricane Katrina, dozens of yoga studios have sprung up all over the Big Easy, and now you can enjoy classes set to live jazz music and in old French Quarter museums: a very New Orleans yoga experience. Check out these four classes and get limbered up and chilled out while experiencing a bit of true New Orleans culture.

1. Candlelight Yoga – Held on the last Friday of every month at Balance Yoga & Wellness in Mid-City, this 7:30 PM class will help you unwind in a uniquely New Orleans way. The room is lit with flickering tea candles and Gipson Blanchard, a New Orleans jazz guitarist, strums dulcet tunes while you’re led through an hour and fifteen minutes of gentle vinyasa poses. Afterwards, enjoy complimentary chai tea and sweets to seal in the month. This is suitable for all levels of students.

Where: Balance Yoga & Wellness, 120 S. Cortez St.
When: Last Friday of every month, 7:30 PM
Cost: $15 Drop-in

2. Yoga in the NOMA Sculpture Garden – Yoga may look like art, but only in New Orleans can you practice yoga among art! Take your yoga practice to the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Sculpture Garden and strike a few poses amid the gorgeous collection of statues from all over the world. Yoga classes are suitable for all levels and are held at 8 AM on the first, second, and third Saturday of every month. Bonus: the fourth Saturday of each month is a Pilates Class!

Where: NOMA Sculpture Garden, One Collins Diboll Circle, City Park
When: 8 AM – 9 AM every Saturday (Fourth Saturday of the month is Pilates)
Cost: $5 for Public, Free for NOMA members and EJWC members
