As we head deeper into festival season in New Orleans, our musical choices expand exponentially. With the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival upon us, this week’s show prepares us for the days between the two weekends of Jazz Fest, when WWOZ’s Piano Night, Instruments a Comin’ and Chaz Festival keep the vibe going for the tireless music lovers inhabiting our city.
New Orleanians savor the time during the Jazz Fest weekends and after hours on the two weekends for this entirely different festival of sorts that begins outside the Fair Grounds gates. Piano Night is the flagship benefit event for the WWOZ New Orleans radio station, traditionally held between Jazz Fest weekends, this year featuring the likes of Tom McDermott, Marcia Ball, Bob Malone and more. The 12th annual Instruments A Comin’ is a benefit concert to support New Orleans school music programs hosted by the Tipitina’s Foundation. The marching band street party will kick off on the neutral ground in front of Tipitina’s at 501 Napoleon Ave on April 29, 2013. Finally, Chaz Festival, named after Washboard Chaz, is a more intimate festival in the Bywater in between the two weekends of Jazz Fest and features a fantastic local New Orleans food and music lineup. In addition, there are great in-store concerts at the Louisiana Music Factory, on Frenchmen Street and other venues all over the city.
