Take Your Wednesdays to the Point

Wednesdays hold a special place in people’s hearts. For small children, they’re the hardest day of the week to spell. For adults, they’re the hump day of the week to get through. And for New Orleanians, they’re the happy day of the week where free music, fantastic food, and outdoor magic come together throughout spring, first at Wednesdays at the Square on the East Bank, and then Wednesdays on the Point on the West.

What’s that, you say? The music continues after May? That’s right. For all of you who know and love Young Leadership Council’s Wednesdays at the Square, or as we affectionately call it, WATS, get ready for even more Wednesday night fun with Wednesdays on the Point, part of Algiers Point Festival Series. Like WATS, Wednesdays at the Point takes your favorite local artists, puts them on an outdoor stage, and offers you the opportunity to kick back with friends and family and listen to live music for free in the music capital of the world. Unlike WATS, the concerts are a chance to catch the breeze of the Mississippi, and our free Algiers Ferry, and explore a part of town as old as the French Quarter.

My favorite way to do Wednesdays on the Point? Grab some friends and head over on the ferry. You can hop on the Algiers Ferry by foot (which runs til midnight), or take the car over on the ferry and drive back. The concerts are perfectly timed to watch the sunset over the magical backdrop of the Mississippi, and as anyone who’s ever caught fireworks from the West Bank knows, there’s nothing like watching the stars come out over Jackson Square.

There’s food available at the concerts, or you can take advantage of the small town feel of one of the oldest parts of town, and take a wander through Algiers to check out some of their great bars and restaurants for a bite. With sultry summer months setting in, the breezes off the river will keep you cool as favorite local artists like the Brass-A-Holics, the Yat Pack, and Amanda Shaw drop it like it’s hot. Check out the full Wednesdays on the Point schedule for the complete lineup.

Experience Wednesdays on the Point every Wednesday from May 29 to July 17, from 6 – 9 p.m. The festival is totally free.
