GoNOLA Guide to Health & Fitness Classes in New Orleans in July

July can be a hot, sweaty month in New Orleans, but that’s no reason to avoid a good sweat. This month’s fitness events are some of the most unique, taking place on rooftops at sunset and in local breweries and cupcake shops. Most classes are low impact, and all offer an extra incentive, whether it’s a post-workout cocktail or a breathtaking view of Lake Pontchartrain.

Greenway Yoga

Enjoy an hour of all-levels yoga in the Lafitte Greenway, a verdant expanse of greenery that runs directly through the city. Led by The Ohm Well, this class is all-levels and suitable for everyone, whether you’re brand new to yoga or have practiced before. There will be mats available to borrow on a first come, first serve basis.

When: Monday, July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 6-7 p.m.

Declaration of You: An Afro-Beat YOGA Experience

Looking for a healthy way to kick off Essence Fest? Plan to swing by Hotel Peter and Paul for an Afro Beat yoga experience hosted by Ajax Jaxson, founder of Magnolia Yoga Studio, the first black-owned yoga studio in New Orleans. Arrive at 9 a.m. to mingle and explore the newly-renovated hotel housed in a historic, restored cathedral in the Marigny. At 10 a.m, flow through an hour of yoga set to live DJs and music, then mingle in the courtyard afterwards with a complimentary cocktail. The ticket price includes yoga, a mat rental, a cocktail, and access to an array of local wellness vendors, including organic skin and hair care by a natural mixologist and spiritual readings by Kalindah Laveaux. Make sure to get your tickets early as this event may sell out.

Fleauxs, Beats, and Sweets

Show of hands, who loves cupcakes? Earn your sweets with a power yoga class at The Cupcake Collection on Magazine Street, hosted by local yoga teacher Valerie McMillan, founder of the Ohm Well. This energetic yoga class is set alongside a live DJ with complimentary sweets to follow. The class is donation based, and mats will be available to borrow on a first come, first serve basis. Bonus: this class is on Valerie’s birthday, so make sure to wish her a happy one!

When: Wednesday, July 3, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

NOTC Summer Race Series

I always need extra motivation to run outside in the summer, and this race provides just that: a course with shade and free beer. This two-mile run takes place in City Park at 7 p.m. once the sun’s rays have waned. At the finish line, there’s free beer, jambalaya, and other refreshments. Plus, it’s only $10 (a steal for a road race), and free if you’re a member of the New Orleans Track Club. There’s no advanced registration, simply arrive a few minutes early to sign up.

When: Wednesday, July 24, 7 p.m.

Where: New Orleans City Park Reunion Shelter;  Enter the park at Friedrichs Avenue & Wisner Boulevard

Admission: $10; Free for NOTC members

Sunset Soiree: Rooftop Yoga + Pilates

Have a case of the Mondays? Wipe them away with a sunset workout and happy hour on the rooftop of the historic Roosevelt Hotel. Taught by April Dupré of Footprints to Fitness, this event includes an hour of hip-hop inspired yoga, Pilates, and barre, a complimentary cocktail, plus access to the hotel’s rooftop pool after. Proceeds go to funding free fitness programming in New Orleans. Participants will need a mat and water bottle. There will be a few extra mats to borrow, just make sure to arrive early to secure one.

Saturday Morning Yoga at Hotel Peter and Paul

Start your Saturday with a peaceful yoga class beneath the towering cathedral ceilings of Hotel Peter and Paul. This historic hotel was once a church, school, and convent that have been repurposed to house an event space, hotel, and bar. These donation based classes take place in the “church,” an event space that includes stained glass windows ringed by gorgeous columns. Grab a coffee at the hotel’s coffee shop after.

When: Saturday, July 13, 20, 27, 9-10 a.m.

Summer Sweat with Pure Barre at Canal Place

Searching for an escape from the heat? Head inside Canal Place for a complimentary Pure Barre class every Tuesday evening in July.  Canal Place is a mall situated on the edge of the French Quarter with sunny skylights and lots of air conditioning. Take the glass elevator up to the third floor and head to the large communal space outside Saks Fifth Avenue. This hour long class will build strength and mobility using low impact movements and body weight exercises suitable for all. Bring a mat and water.

When: Tuesday, July 9, 16, 23, 30, 6-7 p.m.

Sunrise Yoga

Local yoga teachers are offering free and donation based classes at the break of day in breathtaking locations all over town. Practice yoga on the breezy stretches of Lake Pontchartrain during Sunrise Yoga at the Lakefront each Thursday at 6:30 a.m. taught by Zoe Thibeault-Stone of NOLA Tribe Yoga. Love the dreamy oak trees in City Park? Swing by The Peristyle for Sunrise Yoga at CIty Park each Wednesday at 6:30 a.m, also hosted by NOLA Tribe Yoga. Staying downtown? Behold sunrise over the mighty Mississippi River during Free Sunrise Yoga at Riverwalk Outlets each Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.

Yoga at Breweries and Bars

Plenty of breweries and bars are offering community workouts for healthy happy hours. If you’re heading uptown, stop by NOLA Brewing for Tap Room Yoga every Monday at 6 p.m. with local yoga teachers Julia Hollings and Talia Livneh. The hour hot power yoga class takes place in the brewery’s warehouse, and you’re sure to work up a good sweat. Just down the road, The Tchoup Yard hosts Tribe Yard Yoga each Wednesday at 6:30p.m. in their open-air outdoor patio. Staying downtown? Check out Free Yoga at Parleaux Beer Lab in the Bywater each Sunday at 11 a.m. or Free Yoga at Gordon Biersch in the CBD on Saturday, July 6 at 10 a.m. All classes have mats to rent or borrow, just make sure to arrive early to secure one.

Move Ya Brass

Move Ya Brass continues its weekly series of fitness classes throughout July. High energy cardio classes like Hip Hop Ya Brass combine hip hop moves and pop music for a tough, but fun dance workout. Other classes include their Community Run class, Stretch Ya Brass, and Twerk Ya Brass. All levels are welcome.
