For a New Orleans experience you’re not going to find in a hotel brochure, BJ’s Lounge on a Monday night is where the New Orleans underground blood pumps. That’s because of its distance from Bourbon Street in the Ninth Ward; the free, homemade red beans simmering in a large pot; the bartenders who’ve been slinging drinks there before the Bywater was cool; and most of all because of the raucous R&B emanating from King James and the Special Men.
King James himself, otherwise known as Jimmy Horn, joins us as our guest on this episode of GoNOLA Radio. Jimmy made his way to New Orleans from Seattle on a whim, and once the vehicle that brought him here broke down, he just decided to stay. That was about 20 years ago. In this episode, our guests Mikko and George find out what it was about New Orleans that kept him here, in addition to his band’s musical inspirations, his friendship with the legendary New Orleans couple Ernie and Antoinette K-Doe, and the incredible lineup of musicians who make up the Special Men.
Discover the evolution of King James and the Special Men, what other New Orleans musicians Jimmy admires, the proper way to make red beans and more in this episode of GoNOLA Radio.
