GoNOLA Tops: Magazine Street Specialty Shops

Magazine Street is a shopper's paradise (Photo: Zack Smith)

New Orleans is known for many things – unique restaurants, unique residents, unique architecture, and unique food. Specialized shops are no exception to that rule, particularly on Magazine Street.

Always filled with both locals and visitors alike, Magazine Street contains six miles of shopping, dining, and historical architecture. Among the businesses found along the stretch are a few specialty shops – stores that have a specific focus, yet don’t fit into other shopping categories. We’ve picked a few of our favorites, offering unique toys, products, and more that you can only find on Magazine Street.

Verdure Olive Oil Company

3634 Magazine St.

At first, you may wonder what olive oil exists beyond the grocery store brand EVOO. However, if you dream it, it can be found at Verdure Olive Oil Co. The Magazine Street shotgun offers a variety of olive oils with unique and authentic flavors from around the world, as well as balsamic vinegars straight from Italy. You can also find specialty seasonings and flavored pastas on their shelves. Then, put those gourmet purchases to use in a delicious recipe.

Nadeau Furniture features two floors of handcrafted wood furniture from India and Indonesia. Each piece is unique and inventory is constantly changing, so don’t pass up the opportunity to make a purchase because it could be gone the next day. The store offers a variety of pieces from coffee tables and credenzas that range in a variety of different colors and fits any design aesthetic.

Magic Box Toys

5508 Magazine St.

Small, locally-owned toys stores like Magic Box Toys are hard to find these days. With the convenience of online shopping, people often sacrifice the experience of seeing their children scour the shelves of books, dolls, and blocks, or even testing out a race car before committing to it. Magic Box offers a variety of toys that range from unique to the most popular games of the moment. There’s always a great selection of dolls, books, arts and craft kits, trains, and dress up outfits, just to name a few.
