2014 Trend Forecasting: New Orleans Style

The new year has arrived and fashion is always changing – GoNOLA predicts upcoming fashion trends and where to find them at New Orleans stores.

There’s something about a good trend forecast that makes me genuinely happy.  Though we’re still in the throws of winter, the spring shopping season is just around the corner, and believe it or not, spring lines have already started hitting New Orleans stores. The fun thing about the fashion world is that you can always look ahead to the next season and can always seek inspiration from your surroundings, especially in New Orleans. Seeing the collections and comparing notes from renowned designers like Karl Lagerfield to Rick Owens, you can notice common threads, and connecting the dots and applying them to your own style is just so satisfying.

Style is a personal interpretation of the elements seen on the runway from top designers, and lucky for us, you can find those trends right here in New Orleans at local shops. Five elements that I’m really enjoying seeing and looking forward to incorporating into my own wardrobe are 1) larger, abstract prints, 2) athletic or street culture (read: sneakers, joggers, etc), 3) metallics (they’re fabulous and they’re not going anywhere), 4) women wearing menswear and 5) size contrasts. Learn more about each style and where you can buy them at New Orleans stores.

Liquid Nike dunks (swoon)

What I love about New Orleans fashion is that we get a chance to adopt spring styles a little ahead of the curve because of our warmer climate.  I have been a sneaker lover for a long time and always embrace a pair of good looking Nike’s because of the functionality and form.  The drop of the metallic “liquid” Nike Dunks blew my mind. You can also incorporate the athletic look as an unexpected element with a flowy silk skirt or tailored cigarette trousers.

Where to buyThe Refresh on N. Peters has an amazing selection of shoes as does Sneaker Politics in Metairie and the Nike Outlet on Carrollton Ave.

Another fun trend happening this Spring is the staying power of metallics. Artists and designers from Katy Perry to Stella McCartney have been playing up the prism trend for months now.  Altuzarra sent a string of metallic numbers down the runway in their Spring 2014 runway show and they were nothing short of breathtaking.  You can incorporate small elements of metallic throughout your wardrobe from a pair of shoes to a great holographic handbag, and even hologram nail polish is a thing.

Where to buyAngelique stores are always on-trend and have an amazing selection of metallic accoutrements.

January 2014 Marie Claire

Over-sized structured pieces paired with fitted tops and bottoms makes this season interesting and approachable from the standpoint that you can get this look using elements from your own closet.  Did you grab a peplum top from the last two seasons? Pair it with a fitted pair of pants of the same color and you can incorporate the structured look. I loved how Rick Owens married street wear and structure, street culture and high end designer garments – a great juxtaposition is what makes fashion…fashion!

Where to buyEm’s on Metairie Road carries the best selection of denim in the city.  Everything from super fitted and skinny jeans to bell bottoms and wider leg trousers.

Large Prints

Graphics are still and will probably always be a way for designers to set their collections apart.  This spring, you’ll notice that rather than small, specific florals or polka dots, designers created their “stamp” by putting big, bold statement graphics on the runway.  Chanel‘s brushstrokes are noticeable  from practically a mile away and I’m absolutely in love with Philip Lim‘s geode-inspired dresses, sweatshirts and more.

Where to buyMimi on Magazine street has an unparalleled collection of designers and can coordinate an ensemble better than many.

Menswear for Women

Last but not least (and speaking of juxtapositions), women wearing a more masculine cut is a 2014 trend just as prominent, if not more so, than ever.  With entertainers like Janelle Monae and her very specific stylistic choices (the crisp white button-down with fitted black trousers and suspenders), women are truly embracing the functionality and chicness of tailored menswear.  In addition to shirting, New-York-based designers like Kimberly Wesson are designing collections that are unisex so that a piece that fits a man can equally be worn by a woman in that “boyfriend-y” style, and let’s be real, we all just want to live in our boyfriends’ clothes anyway.
