The Top 5 French Antiques Shop on Magazine Street: #1 Karla Katz

GoNOLA highlights the Top 5 French Antiques Stores on Magazine Street in New Orleans; The street is filled with many French antiques shops, design stores and artist studios.

I have been doing a series on the Top Five French Antiques Shops on Magazine Street. It has been an amazing task choosing from the dozens that line what has become the shopping street for design and decor. Picking #1 was a careful and considered choice.

Karla Katz is my pick for the number one French antiques shop. Karla bought the chic house she painted a crisp white over 15 years ago when Magazine Street was showing its first glimmer of what it has become today. Her passion for collecting French antiques has culminated in a stellar career as a respected expert. Every designer and decor lover in New Orleans always checks in with Karla to see what treasures she brings. In a city filled to the brim with fine French furnishings, it is no small matter to have achieved the prominence and affection that Karla Katz has garnered.

Karla still shops for the beautiful things for her shop, the old fashion way – she makes yearly trips to France to hand pick a container filled to the brim. She says that when a shipment comes in (the next one is due in December), furniture is stacked to the high ceilings of her shop.

While most of the merchandise is from France, there is a smattering of smart looking Italian and English pieces.  Furniture is first and foremost, but you will also find art work, chandeliers, lamps, sconces, mirrors, ceramics, sculptures, and textiles.

On a recent visit, I nearly swooned seeing some over size wood turned chandeliers, a sconce in the shape of an arm, a wall hanging in the form of a cherub, some whimsical white ceramic pieces done by Jamie Meeks, strands of gigantic ivory beads, a pair of 19th century walrus tusks on stands, pairs of daybeds and bergeres…well you get the idea.

Karla Katz is open Monday – Saturday, and yes they ship worldwide. Karla’s son David Katz is often on hand. David specializes in fabulous mid century modern furniture and art work, and is well versed in antiques as well, and can be of tremendous help when you are looking for that one spectacular special piece.

So in honor of Bastille Day, Vive La France! New Orleans wouldn’t be New Orleans without France!  Go visit Karla Katz ( 4017 Magazine Street, (504) 897-0061), and pick up something so very French!
