NOLA Cheap: 5 Things Under $5.00

Enjoy beignets from the classic Café du Monde. (Photo: Paul Broussard)

You don’t have to spend big to have fun in the Big Easy. Here are 5 things to do under $5.00.

St. Charles Streetcar
Ride the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar through Uptown New Orleans with our itinerary. (Photo: Paul Broussard)

1. Ride the Street Car up St. Charles Avenue and take in the beautiful sights of the uptown Garden District. New Orleans has 20 historic districts on the National Register, more than any other city in the US, and the street car is the perfect way to see some of the city’s most beautiful homes. The street car has stops along Canal Street downtown and St. Charles Avenue uptown. $1.25 one way.

2. It may seem trite, but c’mon, even locals love Café Du Monde! Grab a delicious breakfast of fresh beignets and café au lait. I prefer my coffee iced, something New Orleans does better than any other city in the country and it’s perfect for our hot summer days!  $4.50

3. Check out the historic 1850 House which was home to the Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba, the daughter of Don Andres Almonester y Roxas, the Spanish colonial landowner. Located at 523 St. Ann Street. $3.00

4. Enjoy one of the local or almost-local brews like NOLA Brewing, Covington Brew House (previously Heiner Brau) or Abita Beer. The beers are hand crafted, made locally and are proudly served in most New Orleans bars. About $3.50-$5.00

5. Chill out with a large snowball from Hansen’s or Plum Street (my personal favorites). Want a grown-up snowball? Try a frozen daiquiri from anyone of the daiquiri shops around the city.  $1-$5
