Finn McCools: Mid-City’s Irish Mecca/World Cup Destination

The Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans is a bit outside of the prime tourist areas, but the neighborly Finn McCool’s is an Irish bar that’s worth making the trip. It’s one of the best places to watch football (both American and European) in New Orleans, with free food during Saints games and crowds for every round of the Champions League. There are plentiful bar games and features some of the friendliest staff in New Orleans. The patrons always want to talk and they will make you feel very welcome for any of the events the bar regularly hosts.

Trivia Night is a great way to get over a long Monday, just make sure to get there early (around 7) as tables fill up for the 8 pm start time. The game is populated with a group of regulars, whose team names often combine New Orleans’ bawdiness with Celtic flavors– for example; a Gaelic expression of Irish pride is corrupted to “Erin Go Bragh-less.” It’s all in good fun however and the questions blend a good mix of history, literature, and New Orleans.

Soccer features heavily into this bar’s identity (there’s even a book about the bar’s soccer team). You’ll find it opens in the early morning throughout soccer season just to accommodate game watching despite the six-hour time difference between New Orleans and the British Isle. The games are a constant – you’ll find rugby scrums and cricket matches on on screen as well. The bar itself supports Scottish power Celtic F.C., but you’re sure to see soccer jerseys from across the world peppering the bar stools. The atmosphere is graciously partisan, with opposing fans seemingly happy just to have someone to root against.

Finn’s football passion means it’s the perfect place to watch this summer’s World Cup from start to finish. All games will be broadcast at the bar, with plenty of HD Televisions plus a projector screen so you won’t have to crane your neck to see the game.  The tournament (TV schedule here) starts on Friday with South Africa playing Mexico, so there should be a strong Mexican contingent at the bar if you’re in the mood to hear some “oles!”. However, if you’re only going to go to Finn’s or watch soccer once, the time to go is this Saturday at 1:30. The occasion is USA vs. England, and there is sure to be plenty of heckling and banter between the Brits and us. It’ll be a perfect atmosphere to see the game and watch England’s World Cup hopes get crushed before they even get a chance to settle in—and if things go south, they can always use a little reminder about what happened in 1776.
