As the moments between now and Mardi Gras Day click steadily away, there’s a palpable excitement in the air. No one wants to be at work, and quite a few have already called it quits for the week. For those of us still in work mode, king cakes and Mardi Gras music have pretty much taken over.
As the ripples of sheer spontaneous joy spread across New Orleans and the prospect of a long weekend of parades settles in, it’s important to note that there are other things going on this weekend. A massive wave of New Orleans musicians have swept into the city, and they are ready to get you out on the dance floor.
With that in mind, here’s a list of what you should be doing this weekend:
Now Through Mardi Gras Day
Parades – Catch Babylon, Chaos, and Muses tonight starting at 5:45, and then don’t miss any parades in this handy schedule until it’s Lent and we all have to calm down. It’s a moral imperative.
Friday, March 4
Not-so-Super Superhero Party – This off kilter annual party at the AllWays Lounge features “super” heroes with the worst possible super posers. Come dressed as Sneezes Bananas Guy, Captain Jellyfish for an Arm, Scotch Tape Man, or some other crazy thing you dream up. (I call dibs on Sneezes Bananas Guy)
AllWays Lounge
2240 St. Claude Avenue
Saturday, March 5
The Stooges Bras Band at the 12 Bar – My favorite thing about parades has always been the massive sound of the marching bands thundering through the old oak trees along St. Charles Avenue. Brass bands are a barely contained version of that same dynamic sound. Swing by the 12 bar at 9 o’clock to catch the Stooges tearing it up.
Sunday, March 6
Honey Island Swamp Band at the Blue Nile – Think you can slack off because it’s Sunday? Think again. The Honey Island Swamp Band will have you dancing all night long at the Blue Nile. Pass by after Bacchus. Show starts at 10 o’clock.
Lundi Gras
Galactic at Tip’s – It wouldn’t be Lundi Gras without a massive Galactic show at Tipitina’s. The show starts at 10 o’clock. No telling when it will end.
Tipitina’s
501 Napoleon Avenue
What are you doing this weekend?
