Rocking on the River At Wednesdays on the Point

The Wednesdays at the Point free concert series is every Wednesday in June and July on Algiers Point, just a short ride from New Orleans on the Canal Street Ferry.

Recently, I encouraged both locals and visitors to get out and enjoy the beautiful view and cool breezes of the Mississippi River. Well now there’s another way to enjoy the Mississippi, with music to boot. Wednesdays on the Point is a weekly concert series organized by the Algiers Economic Development Foundation to encourage folks to visit one of the most scenic spots along the river: Algiers Point.

Though separated from New Orleans by the Mississippi, Algiers is still part of New Orleans and visitors often remark on the similarity of housing styles seen in Algiers and older New Orleans neighborhoods like Treme and the Marigny. Like its neighbors across the river, Algiers has a rich history. It served as a waiting area for the Cajuns who arrived here from Canada en route to settling in the western part of Louisiana. Part of the Battle of New Orleans was even fought here. The area closest to the French Quarter sits in a sharp bend in the river, forming a point and now most New Orleanians refer to that older section of Algiers as “The Point.”  Today the lovely neighborhood offers tranquil beauty within a stone’s throw (or a ferry ride) of the French Quarter.

The Wild Magnolias kick off the concert series on June 6 with their unique blend of Mardi Gras Indian style funk. Enjoy the tunes, food and fun and if you want the party to continue, head on over to some of the more popular watering holes in the Point, including the Crown and Anchor, the Dry Dock and the Old Point Bar. Getting there couldn’t be any easier.  Just hop on the Canal Street Ferry over to Algiers Point every Wednesday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. through July 25. Regardless of how you get there, you will enjoy the cool breezes and even cooler tunes of Wednesdays on the Point.
