SÖPÖ: New Orleans Shopping in Mid-City

In a city full of fantastic boutiques ranging from local jewelers to high-end couture labels to essential party service, sometimes it’s hard to make a splash in the tight knit retail community.  New boutique, SÖPÖ in Mid-City has done just that.  Owners Britta and Robin set out to “carry lines that were not carried in any other retailer in New Orleans or southern Louisiana.”  Open since last November, SÖPÖ, Finnish for “Cute” (or an acronym for Southern Posh if you prefer), covers all of the bases.  It’s just off the Carrollton streetcar line and right next door to one of my favorite coffee shops, which in my opinion is essential for the success, and growth of any business, especially retail.

Inside SÖPÖ

“Hello! Welcome to SÖPÖ!” Robin and Britta greet visitors. It’s quite a nice welcome.  Start perusing the shelves and you’ll find yourself falling in love with just about everything.  Louisiana-shaped bamboo cutting board? Check.  Beer bottle holster? Got it.  Amazing silk dresses, Rainraps (shawl-like waterproof wraps), denim of all kinds and more? SÖPÖ has you covered.  I especially love the baby section full of organic blankets and toys.  A well-merchandised store makes you realize that your life simply can’t go on without (fill in the blank) and SÖPÖ does this perfectly.

With the new Mid-City Market opening sometime in 2013, you’ll find the block of Carrollton between Canal and Orleans will become increasingly popular.  I am excited for this development as well as the ongoing smaller developments of amazing stores like SÖPÖ here in New Orleans. We know how to survive, now it’s time for New Orleans to thrive.
