Oktoberfest with Deutsches House: German Food, Music, Beer, and More Beer in New Orleans – VB

I write “Boerne” and you probably say “Born.” That is, unless you’re from Central Texas and know better. When you’re from Boerne (pronounced “Bernie”) and learn to drive in Bexar County (pronounced “Bear County”), you grow walking down a main street called Hauptstrasse, choosing between learning German or Spanish in school, and braid your hair and don your suspenders to celebrate Berges Fest every spring.

What does this have to do with New Orleans? Well, it’s October, which means the start of the month-long German celebration of Oktoberfest. And as a bonafide, German festival-loving, wheelbarrow-race winning German festival expert, I’m here to tell you, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Oktoberfest lasts three full weekends during the month of October, and each weekend is packed with German music, food, activities, and of course, beer. This is a month of New Orleans events that are adult-friendly, kid-friendly, and even dog-friendly–particularly if your dog is a Dachshund. The Dachshund Races fall on October 12 this year, with categories for puppies, seniors, and wheelies (dogs in carts). The Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk. is an opportunity for some healthy physical competition, and maybe a way to work off the German food and drink you’ll be enjoying. Most importantly, if you have any interest in anything to do with beer–German beer, great beer, drinking beer outside, or beer accompanied by amazing, homemade food, this event is for you.

The other other reasons to go are as many and varied as the dozens of German and German-inspired beers from Germany, Louisiana, and Texas.  Munch on favorite traditional homemade and festival food bites like a warm butter-n-salted pretzel or a smoked turkey leg and take in the sights of families, dancers, the sounds of traditional music, and the samples of German goods.

During Oktoberfest in New Orleans, you’ll be able to get the best meal deal in town, the dinner plate special for $13, including your choice of entrée, a sausage, two sides, and bread and butter. There’s even a chance to win a $500 cash prize to boot! Enjoy the heart-warming, soul-reviving sounds of “Wilkommen!” you’ll hear all around you as you watch the sun set from your picnic table perch at New Orleans Oktoberfest headquarters, Deutsches Haus.
